Sebastian Vettel secured the 36th pole position of his career this afternoon in Austin, and his 6th of the season. The German driver was the fastest as F1 made its return to the United States. Mark Webber completed a good result for Red Bull by taking the 3rd spot on the grid.

After pushing his McLaren to the absolute limit, Lewis Hamilton had to admit defeat in his battle for pole position with Sebastian Vettel. Meanwhile, Jenson Button experienced another mechanical issue during Q2, preventing him from reaching Q3.

Even though he experienced some issues with his tires, Nico Hülkenberg managed to place his VJM05 in Q3 this afternoon in Austin. The German driver will start 7th on the grid. Paul di Resta, suffering from the same problems, wasn't as fortunate; the Scottish driver ended up in 13th place.

If Pastor Maldonado managed to make it to Q3 in Austin, it was not the case for Bruno Senna. However, both Williams drivers will be close on the grid tomorrow because the Venezuelan could do no better than 10th time, while the Brazilian achieved the 11th fastest time. With higher temperatures than this morning, the Lotus team managed to stand out in Austin. Romain Grosjean achieved the 4th fastest qualifying time and Kimi Räikkönen the 5th, but the Finn will start 4th as his French teammate received a penalty for a gearbox change, so Grosjean will start 9th tomorrow.

The two HRT drivers had a complicated day, especially this morning during Free Practice 3, and even though things improved during qualifying, Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan ended up far from their direct rivals and couldn't do better than to line up on the last row.

No Sauber driver managed to get beyond Q2 today during the qualifying for the 2012 United States Grand Prix. Kobayashi and Pérez specifically complained about issues with getting their tires up to temperature and effectively exploiting their performance.
