Lewis Hamilton confirmed Mercedes' good form with the first pole position of the season. Sebastian Vettel, however, managed to squeeze his Ferrari in between the two Silver Arrows, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen. Daniel Ricciardo, in front of his home crowd, crashed out and will only start 10th tomorrow.

The two Sauber drivers, who were expected to close the gap in the first two practice sessions of the Australian Grand Prix, put in good performances instead, with Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein finishing 15th and 18th respectively.

Romain Grosjean put in a solid performance in the first two free practice sessions of the season, setting the 8th fastest time each time. On the other side of the garage, Kevin Magnussen experienced a few technical difficulties and didn't get to do many laps.

If there was any doubt, Valtteri Bottas once again confirmed that Mercedes would be there for the new season. By smashing the track record with a time of 1.19.705, the Finn was ahead of Sebastian Vettel and his Ferrari, just two and a half tenths off the pace on softer tires than the Silver Arrow.
