Since Singapore's arrival on the calendar, several Grand Prix have been considered for nighttime races, but none have taken the plunge. The Malaysian Grand Prix is one of them, but the officials of the Sepang circuit have no desire to see the race take place at night.

Mercedes wants to put an end to two mixed years, and the entire technical team of the German team has worked to design an innovative F1 W03. The latter was deemed legal by the FIA before the Australian Grand Prix tests, but the Lotus F1 and Red Bull teams, on the other hand, believe that the F-Duct type system used by Mercedes during DRS activation does not comply with the regulations.

Pirelli summarizes the strategies used during the qualifying sessions. Paul Hembery notably praises the performance of Romain Grosjean, who was, at one time, a development driver for the Italian manufacturer.

The two Red Bull team drivers could only manage a third row start in Melbourne. But Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are convinced they can gain a few positions tomorrow, and perhaps finish on the podium for this first race of the season. Neither of the two men had a perfect qualifying lap, with Vettel making a mistake on his lap and Webber lacking KERS, which fuels their hopes for a better day tomorrow in the race.

Highly anticipated today, the McLarens did not disappoint as they claimed the front row, three-tenths ahead of Grosjean and his Lotus, and seven-tenths ahead of the Red Bulls. Lewis Hamilton secured the pole position on his first attempt in Q3, with Button missing by just a few thousandths.

Tipped as a team to watch this season, Lotus makes a statement by securing the third-fastest time in this first qualification of the season, thanks to Romain Grosjean who ranks behind the two McLarens. Pastor Maldonado managed to place his Williams FW34 in Q3 during the qualifying session in Melbourne. The Venezuelan driver will start from 8th place on the grid tomorrow and hopes to score his first points of the season. Felipe Massa hoped to fight for a podium this weekend in Australia, but after the qualifying session, it is clear that the Brazilian and Scuderia Ferrari will have to lower their expectations. Neither Fernando Alonso nor Felipe Massa managed to get past Q2, and both men acknowledge that the F2012 is not as good or as fast as its rivals. The Italian team will therefore have to work to improve, and earning a few points tomorrow during the race seems to be the only achievable goal for the men from Maranello.

Like last season, and despite a few laps during the various free practice sessions, both HRTs, driven by Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan, did not pass the 107% threshold and will therefore not participate in the race tomorrow. There is still a lot of work to be done by Friday and the first tests in Kuala Lumpur.

Even though Timo Glock's qualifying time is almost two seconds behind Petrov's and his Caterham, the German driver was pleased with the progress made by the Marussia team. Charles Pic, who clocked a time half a second behind his teammate, is happy with his day and hopes to leave Australia with the feeling of having given it his all after tomorrow's race.
