Lewis Hamilton dominated the first two free practice sessions of this Chinese Grand Prix. Kimi Räikkönen consistently placed behind the Briton, noticeably closing the gap to the Mercedes during the second session. The Haas cars of Grosjean and Magnussen as well as the Renaults of Hülkenberg and Sainz regularly completed the Top 10 behind the discreet Red Bulls.

Sebastian Vettel won the Bahrain Grand Prix ahead of Valtteri Bottas. Lewis Hamilton salvaged the situation and finished on the third step of the podium. Pierre Gasly achieved the best result for a Honda engine by finishing 4th! Both Red Bulls retired, as did Kimi Räikkönen, who was victim to a disastrous pit stop during which one of his mechanics was injured.

Driving his Toro Rosso with a Honda engine, Pierre Gasly performed miracles by securing the 6th fastest time in the qualifying session in Bahrain. He will start in 5th position following Lewis Hamilton's penalty. In the French camp, Esteban Ocon also managed to place his stubborn Force India in the Top 10, while it was a dismal afternoon to forget for Romain Grosjean.
