24h du Mans: Ferrari no. 50 wins ahead of Toyota no. 7, disappointments for Alpine and BMW
The number 50 Ferrari won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, taking the Hypercar category in the process. This is the second consecutive year that Ferrari has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Toyota took second place on the podium with the #7 at just 14 seconds, while the second Ferrari took third place at 36 seconds.
After winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 with number 51, Ferrari wins again at Le Mans this time with #50, driven by Fuoca, Molina, and Nielsen. The crew experienced an incident in the last hours against one of its main competitors for the win, the Toyota #8 driven by Buemi, Hartley, and Hirakawa.
This incident, which took the Toyota off the podium, resulted in a 5-second penalty from the stewards. Some deemed the penalty too light given the consequences, which could have cost car number 50 its victory. In the heat of battle, the two hypercars made contact, and the Ferrari, right behind, caused the Toyota to spin, resulting in a loss of more than 1 minute.
Despite this incident, Toyota still secures the second place this weekend at Le Mans with the #7 driven by Lopez, Kobayashi, and de Vries. It is the second Ferrari that completes the podium with the victorious number 51 from last year piloted by Pier Guidi, Calado, and former F1 driver Giovinazzi.
These 24 Hours of Le Mans, although spectacular and full of suspense thanks to the weather conditions becoming rainy twice, have highlighted two forces: Toyota and Ferrari in this race of speed but above all of reliability. The victorious Ferrari is the only one to have carried out a perfect strategy, giving it a huge advantage when the rain arrived but taking some risks during the first showers, deciding not to change to rain tires.
Car number 6 Porsche takes 4th place, just ahead of the second Toyota pushed by the Ferrari, which finally finishes 5th. The second Porsche finishes 6th ahead of Lynn, Palou, and Bamber’s Cadillac. Team Jota places these two hypercars in 8th and 9th place at Le Mans while the Lamborghini Iron Lynx complete the top 10.
14 hypercars ranked ahead of an LMP2
Among the 22 hypercars that started the race, including Alpine, Peugeot, and BMW, only 14 are classified ahead of LMP2 cars. Indeed, the first LMP2 is classified in 15th place with United Autosport.
Peugeot’s two Hypercars are classified outside the top 10, in 11th and 12th position, ahead of the second Lamborghini and the Isotta.
No BMW or Alpine classified
The two Hypercars from Alpine and BMW had to withdraw. Alpine lacked reliability, as they feared, and lost both their cars even before nightfall.
The two BMWs, on the other hand, suffered heavy damage in accidents and had to retire.
