8 Hours of Bahrain: Toyota without competition, first victory for Iron Dames
Toyota number 8 emerged victorious in this final round of the WEC season and clinched the title. In LMGTE-AM, the Iron Dames secured their first victory in the World Endurance Championship.
The race was a bit long to watch. All the actors in this last event of the season behaved well. Well, almost everyone. At the start, the Cadillac number 2 completely missed its braking point and rear-ended the Toyota number 7. This caused a huge commotion in the first meters of the track.
Bad luck for Alpine
Some LMP2 and GTE cars were also involved in the crash. United Autosport and Alpine number 36 were the victims. The French car, which had started second, lost everything and found itself at the bottom of the standings. Forced to make a fantastic comeback, car number 36 finished in 7th place in its category, for its last race in LMP2. Team WRT achieved a double victory and car number 41, driven by Louis Deletraz, Robert Kubica, and Rui Andrade, won the title.
Apart from this incident, the rest of the race was very calm. Only the Toyota number 7 livened up the beginning of the race. After starting from the back of the pack following the collision at the start, it took only two short hours for it to reach the second position, behind its sister car. They maintained this position until the finish line. The number 8 car secured the world championship. The brand itself further enters the history books with five consecutive titles.
Ferrari discreet
Ferrari, who still had hopes of winning the title, was almost non-existent. Facing tire wear issues, the red cars were worried by the Porsche of the Jota team. But in the end, the 50 car brings a podium finish from the desert. Vanwall once again experienced mechanical problems.
In LMGTE-AM, the Iron Lynx Porsche took advantage of the chaotic start of the race to climb up the rankings and reclaim the lead in the category, benefiting the Iron Dames. However, car number 60 experienced reliability issues and was the first to retire. The Bovy-Gatting-Frey trio didn’t ask for more to regain the top spot and secure their first victory in WEC. The all-female crew secures the GTE vice-champion title.
