Diriyah 2024 ePrix – Race 2: Nick Cassidy emerges victorious and takes the lead in the championship

Three races, three podiums including one victory. This is the almost perfect record of Nick Cassidy at the end of the third race of the Formula E season 10. After the Diriyah ePrix, it is therefore not surprising that the Jaguar driver finds himself at the top of the championship with a nineteen-point lead over Pascal Wehrlein.

During the second race of the weekend held in the suburbs of Riyadh, Cassidy, starting from the second row, managed to balance his efforts between well-timed attacks and controlled energy consumption. It is worth noting that only 21 drivers started the race as Sébastien Buemi was forced to withdraw due to significant repairs needed on his car after an accident during qualifying.

At the start, it is Robin Frijns who makes the best start by overtaking poleman Oliver Rowland right from the first turn. The Envision driver manages to create a small gap before the strategies related to Attack Mode come into play. In this little game, it is Cassidy who comes out as the winner as he finds himself in the lead ahead of Frinjs and Rowland.

The power of the Jaguar engine allows the New Zealander to build a lead of up to three and a half seconds over second place. Frijns and Rowland then make an effort and eventually manage to catch up with the leader in the final laps, bringing several other drivers with them. As a result, the top seven drivers crossing the finish line are separated by just five seconds.

Cassidy finally prevails and takes his first win of the season, securing the championship lead. Frijns and Rowland complete the podium, celebrating their brilliant return to their former teams, with the Dutchman at Envision and the Briton at Nissan. Jake Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne close out the top 5, while the French drivers Sacha Fenestraz and Jean-Eric Vergne also finish in the points.

It should be noted that the winner of the first race of the weekend and defending champion, Jake Dennis, could only manage a 12th place finish after a difficult qualifying session, while his teammate Norman Nato crossed the line in 16th place.

See you on March 16th in Brazil for the fourth race of the season at the second Sao Paulo ePrix in history.
