Monaco Grand Prix F2 – Qualifying: Théo Pourchaire on pole position!

Qualifications for Group A

Group A was the first to set off on the streets of Monaco, the group consisted of: Vips, Drugovich, Pourchaire, Piastri, Nissany, Backman, Aitken, Daruvala, Petecof, Viscaal and Zendeli.

One minute before the end of this first session, Vips is leading the timing charts with a time of 1:21.523. He is ahead of the French driver Théo Pourchaire and his ART Grand Prix team. But in the final seconds, it is Oscar Piastri who joins the battle. Under the checkered flag, the Australian driver fails to beat the time set by our French driver and takes second place in this qualifying session.

At only 17 years old, Théo Pourchaire will start from the front row in the main race on Saturday afternoon, he will start from pole position if his time (1:20.985) is not beaten in the qualifying session of group B (Explanations of the qualifying format at the end of the article).

Qualifications of Group B

Group B was composed of the leader in the drivers’ standings; Guanyu Zhou but also of Shwartzman, Ticktum, Lawson, Lundgaard, Verschoor, Samaia, Armstrong, Boschung, Deleda, and Sato.

The drivers had in sight the time established by Théo Pourchaire during the qualifying session of group A, but one minute before the end of the session, no one had managed to approach the time of the French driver from ART Grand Prix. Under the checkered flag, no driver beats the reference time and the French driver will indeed start from pole position next Saturday.

What a performance from Théo Pourchaire who claims pole position in his very first Monaco Grand Prix. The Grasse native showed who was boss in Monaco!

Format and rules for qualifications

In order to avoid incidents on the track, F2 drivers are divided into 2 groups and have 16 minutes to set a reference time. The driver with the fastest absolute time will start first, accompanied on the front row by the driver who achieved the best time in the other session.
