The FIA had decided to ban blown diffusers - also called low blowing - from 2012. Several teams - Red Bull, McLaren, and Lotus Renault notably - had tried to postpone the implementation of this ban, but this request was unsuccessful, and the concept introduced by Red Bull, and adopted by its rivals, will therefore no longer be legal from next year.

The first day of testing at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was not an easy one for the Marussia Virgin Racing drivers. Timo Glock encountered some issues during the first session before things somewhat settled during the second session. Robert Wickens drove the MVR-02 for the first time during a test session and he is delighted and looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of this car next Thursday. Jérome d'Ambrosio, on the other hand, had given up his seat to the Canadian and thus experienced a busy second testing session but he seems confident for the rest of the weekend.

The three Lotus Renault GP drivers were involved during this first day of free practice as Romain Grosjean lined up alongside Vitaly Petrov during the first session. He was then replaced by Bruno Senna in the R31 for the second session of the day.

The Spanish world champion experienced an off-track excursion at the end of free practice but remains satisfied with his day, even though he states he doesn't think he can fight for pole or victory this weekend. His teammate, Felipe Massa, is also pleased with his performance of the day and hopes for a more peaceful qualifying and race compared to the past few weeks.
