Qualified in 7th position, Kimi Räikkönen finished the race in 7th after spending most of his time in Felipe Massa's exhaust. The Finn, however, had to settle for seeing the diffuser of the F2012, due to insufficient top speed to overtake. Romain Grosjean, on the other hand, managed to gain a few positions and two points but also suffered from Lotus's setup choices.

Until the 31st lap, the Williams cars were almost running together, with Bruno Senna ahead of Pastor Maldonado thanks to an opportunistic overtaking following an attack from Romain Grosjean. But the Venezuelan, after cutting in on Kamui Kobayashi after an overtaking maneuver, suffered a puncture that dropped him back into the pack and allowed his Brazilian teammate to take the last position within the points.

Anonymous in qualifying, the Mercedes drivers scarcely found the spotlight in the race, except at their own expense. Clipped by Jean-Eric Vergne in the first lap, Michael Schumacher quickly saw his hopes dashed by a puncture before retiring with a gearbox problem. While Jean-Eric Vergne was forced to make an early stop to change the front wing after colliding with Michael Schumacher at the start, Daniel Ricciardo finished the race behind Paul di Resta and Bruno Senna, with whom he had battled in the first lap before losing ground due to his Hard tires.

The races of Sergio Pérez and Kamui Kobayashi were ruined by contacts. Sergio Pérez, starting in the Top 10, experienced a blistering problem with his front left tire, and after an unscheduled stop, his return to the pack collided with Daniel Ricciardo, causing a fatal puncture. Kamui Kobayashi, ultimately finishing 14th, suffered a similar fate, but he was in the role of tire wrecker during his contact with Pastor Maldonado's Williams.

As often, the Caterhams were isolated in the race, noticeably faster than the Marussia and HRT but slower than the rest of the field. The two Caterham drivers therefore fought for 17th place, which went to Vitaly Petrov, as his teammate Heikki Kovalainen suffered a KERS failure.

In a tactical race where the tires lasted longer than expected, Sebastian Vettel secured his 4th consecutive victory and his 5th win of the year, ahead of Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber, who suffered from KERS issues. The gap between the two double World Champions increases to 13 points with 3 races remaining. Kimi Räikkönen, in 7th place, is 67 points behind and is almost out of the title contention.
