Off to a bad start yesterday after being excluded from qualifying, Sebastian Vettel corrected the situation today by managing to reach the podium despite a damaged front wing following contacts at the start of the race. By finishing the race in 4th place, Jenson Button enabled the McLaren team to achieve a 56th consecutive points finish, breaking the previous record of 55 held by Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, expressed disappointment with his retirement but the 2008 world champion intends to try to win one or even both of the remaining races.

Despite the race conditions, Heikki Kovalainen could not manage better than thirteenth position at the finish of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, while one place higher would have allowed Caterham to reclaim the tenth position in the constructors' championship. Relegated to 16th position, Vitaly Petrov struggled to find grip with a CT01 that was suffering from understeer.

The races for the two Mercedes were not easy: after a first-lap contact with Romain Grosjean, Nico Rosberg saw his race end in an accident where he collided with Narain Karthikeyan's HRT, which was already moving slowly due to damage; for Michael Schumacher, a puncture caused by debris prevented him from scoring points. The German team now sees Sauber closing in to 12 points in the battle for 5th place in the constructors' standings.
