Rome has officially abandoned its project to establish a Formula 1 race in the city, with the Italian city indicating that its efforts will be dedicated to securing the Olympic Games.
After months of speculation about holding a race on the streets of Rome, hopes were dashed a few weeks ago when Bernie Ecclestone wrote a letter to the organizers saying that a country cannot host two races. Since Monza already has a long-term contract to host the Italian Grand Prix, this destroyed Rome’s hopes of having a race.
Although it was suggested that Rome would continue to push, its mayor Gianni Alemanno indicated that his F1 dream was over.
« We formally and definitively abandon the hypothesis of a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Rome. » he told La Stampa. « This represents a step back because we had always said that we would want it if the FIA posed an alternative between Rome and Monza. However, we still have an Olympic dream, and we will make it clear to Italy and the whole world that we want to organize the Olympic Games in Rome. »
