Stefan GP has renewed its efforts to try to secure a place in Formula 1 after its attempt to be on the grid this season was rejected by the FIA. Team owner Zoran Stefanovic had worked hard to secure an F1 spot using the 2010 Toyotas with Jacques Villeneuve and Kazuki Nakajima as drivers.
But despite the fact that USF1 could not be ready in time, the FIA decided to allow Stefan GP as a replacement. Now the Serbian team has not only stated that it has its eye on one of the spots for next year but has also revealed plans for the construction of a Serbian circuit, hoping it can host F1.
Stefan GP wanted to make a public statement to announce that AMCO Corporation and Zoran Stefanovic have signed an agreement with the mayor of Stara Pazova, a city located 25km from Belgrade, to build the Stefan Technology Park» announced the new team’s site about a 3.5km long circuit.
The park will include a track suitable for Formula 1 and a technical complex that will serve as the team’s headquarters once it is completed in 2 years.
The statement also says that the team is officially announcing its candidacy for the 2011 Formula 1 championship. Zoran Stefanovic stated: «I think this is an excellent development for our team, the city of Stara Pazova, the region, and the country. It is proof that we want to be a serious, high-tech team, and we are serious about participating in the championship in the long term. Keeping in mind that we will soon be on an equal footing with the top teams, in terms of facilities and organization like the Stefan Technology Park aiming to compare itself to them, we expect many improvements in the future. »
The team’s website also revealed the names of the drivers the team had contacted for a potential seat this year. In addition to confirming Villeneuve and Nakajima, the list also includes Sébastien Loeb, Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien, and Takuma Sato.
