The KERS, a key to a more eco-friendly F1?

The leader of the Williams team, Frank Williams, stated that he believes the reintroduction of KERS is essential for the ecological image of Formula 1, and this would limit the criticism made of this sport by environmental groups and the press.

This system is still usable according to the regulations, but the different teams have decided not to equip their cars with it, mainly due to the high cost. However, its return was discussed during one of the meetings this weekend, and Williams has clearly declared in favor of it.

« The KERS is a very useful thing for controlling emissions and for energy saving. Yes, it’s expensive, it’s technically difficult to implement, but one day or another, something will have to be done. »

Last year, only the McLaren and Ferrari teams used KERS during the majority of the season, while BMW and Renault abandoned it during the season. The other teams decided not to use it at all, after evaluating it during testing.

« If three teams have the system, and the others do not, the chances of winning if you don’t have it are lower. I think it should be mandatory, or completely banned for all teams. We can no longer use our KERS, which is bulkier than the others, and the only place we can put it is behind the driver, » explains the Williams team boss.

« If we want to install our KERS with the new fuel tank size, we will have a car longer than a London bus. So we will use it elsewhere. »
