The decision-making body of the FIA will reopen the selection process for a potential 13th team to join the competition in 2011, the FIA announced this Thursday in a press release.
The board of directors made its decision just after the USF1 team, which was the 13th team for the 2010 season, gave up on the idea of competing in the championship this year. The American team also asked the FIA to postpone its entry into the competition by a year.
However, the FIA – Fédération Internationale de L’Automobile – has decided to reopen the selection for the vacant spot, which means that a significant number of candidates hope to race next season.
Lola, Epsilon Euskadi, Prodrive, and N.Technology were among the teams requesting entry into the competition this year. They will undoubtedly be candidates for the 2011 season.
The board added that USF1 could face sanctions for its absence: « In view of the non-participation of the USF1 team in the 2010 championship, the world council has mandated the president of the FIA, in full compliance with the new code of practice for disciplinary matters, to advance the most appropriate action », it said in a statement.
The FIA also confirmed that rookie Karun Chandhok has obtained his super license to participate with the HRT team in the Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled for this weekend.
