Fernando Alonso stated he was very happy to have helped the FIA reveal the McLaren spying scandal on Ferrari in 2007.
McLaren had been excluded from the championship and received a record fine of $100 million for possessing technical data on Ferrari.
Alonso was then a driver for the English team and he had collaborated with the FIA to reveal this spying to the general public.
In an interview with the Guardian on Tuesday, the double world champion discussed this matter: « With this espionage story, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But I was very happy to help the FIA uncover everything. »
Alonso left McLaren at the end of 2007, before his contract ended and after a grueling season during which he had been very critical of the treatment he received from the team.
The Spaniard suggested not being treated equally with his teammate and rookie Lewis Hamilton. According to him, the team learned lessons from that period, and he hopes that Jenson Button will not encounter such problems.
«We will see, » continued Alonso. «Obviously I don’t know how McLaren is currently, but if Jenson had joined during my time, then it would have been very hard for him. But hopefully, it’s now a better time for him because I have learned a lot from this season and McLaren as well. »
He added: At the time, McLaren and Ferrari were battling against each other and it was very tight. In the end, I think we had the best car but we finished second and third. Unfortunately, we did something wrong.
