No Indonesian GP in the next 10 years

When Jean Todt, president of the FIA, visited Indonesia last week, some newspapers took it as a sign that F1 might one day join the 4th most populous country in the world, always in its desire to expand into new markets.

The country has only one decent circuit, which hosts international races including A1GP, located in Sentul, 40 km from Jakarta.

Nevertheless, Jean Todt specified that the circuit did not suit Formula 1 and that some changes would be necessary to consider a possible Grand Prix at the Sentul International Circuit.

« Of course, F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and I must say it is encouraging to see the evolution of the sport in the Asian region, » Todt stated to the local newspaper Jakarta Post. « I have personally been to the Sentul circuit, and it is definitely not up to the standard of a Formula 1 circuit. But I am sure that with some renovations, this circuit could host the WTCC championship. »

Regarding a potential Indonesian Grand Prix, Jean Todt clearly stated that it would not be feasible in the next five to ten years.

« It depends on where you start from, it’s a step-by-step progression. If you want to see an F1 race, you need a track up to standards. Currently, you don’t have one of those standards, » added the 63-year-old Frenchman.
