The president of the Toyota F1 team, John Howett, is full of praise for Kamui Kobayashi, after two quite convincing Grand Prix performances.
The young Japanese amazed everyone yesterday by finishing 6th in the race. He didn’t flinch when he overtook Button, who had just come out of the pits!
As Toyota has to consider appointing two drivers for next year, Kobayashi is in a good position to be confirmed.
John Howett declares: Given his good results, we will have to seriously consider Kobayashi’s candidacy. I am very impressed. What we like about him is his “fighting spirit.” He is not intimidated by anyone. It’s very positive.
He states that his recent performances have erased doubts about his potential after a difficult year spent in GP2. Indeed, that mediocre season in GP2 made them hesitate about a possible continuation of his career in F1.
« We always knew he had racing in his blood, and it has always been the case throughout his career. But since he didn’t perform very well in GP2, we were hesitant to bring him up to F1. It’s a lesson that shows we should always be brave in choosing our drivers and not necessarily make safer decisions. »
Although more experienced drivers like Kovalainen and Sutil have had contacts with Toyota, Howett felt that Kobayashi’s performances might prompt the team to choose two young drivers.
« We are in talks with some established drivers in the discipline. But if obstacles stand in the way of signing the contracts, then we will make unexpected decisions. »
Note that Toyota should confirm its drivers after the meeting on November 15 during which the 2010 budget will be voted on.
