The day was packed with information for the engineers at Williams to find the right settings, but quite calm on the timing side for the drivers. Nico Rosberg finished in 13th place after completing 27 laps and clocked 39 in the second session to finish in 9th position. The German-Monegasque driver is quite pleased with the mechanical settings his team found for his car today. His teammate Kazuki Nakajima finished in 14th and 12th place.
Tomorrow, the two Williams drivers will have a lot of work on track to find the right compromise between performance and wear with the soft and hard tires.
Nico Rosberg – 13th and 9th:
I enjoyed driving on this track for the first time today. It was dusty at first and for the second session, we acclimatized to the conditions with the artificial lights in the darkness and the effect on the tires from the sharp drop in temperature. Visibility was really good during the second session and the temperature change didn’t seem to have a big impact. The most uncertain element is the tire choice, as it’s hard to say which one is best between the two options. In terms of settings, we definitely found the right direction, particularly on the mechanical side. Overall, a good day that made me confident we can score points here this weekend.
Kazuki Nakajima – 14th and 12th:
« It was an interesting day piloting the first daytime session and the second at night. The track improved a lot and we spent the day looking for the right direction for the settings. Choosing the tires will be complicated, it will surely be the key factor we will examine tomorrow. »
Rod Nelson – Chief Engineer:
« It’s a new circuit, so it was important to spend as much time on track as possible. The circuit is very professional and impeccable, however, being near the desert, it is sandy. This probably affected the times we saw today. Considering our tire tests, we have a lot to think about tonight. It will be interesting to see in what condition the track will be tomorrow since it improved significantly during the day today.»
