The head of the Daimler group, Dieter Zetsche, will be traveling to Abu Dhabi this week for the last race of the season. His role would be to negotiate Mercedes’ plans for 2010 and beyond. The Mercedes team, with a 40% stake in McLaren, surely wants the possibility of a new agreement with BrawnGP. Norbert Haug has downplayed, but not denied, the information in Abu Dhabi during this crucial weekend regarding Mercedes’ approach to evolution in Formula 1. However, McLaren and Mercedes are bound by an exclusivity contract until 2011, making it likely that the partnership between them will remain unchanged until then.
However, Mercedes is reportedly eager to start its collaboration with BrawnGP immediately, possibly by taking a 75% stake in the team. But according to Norbert Haug, vice president of Mercedes Motorsport, all of this is pure speculation, and he does not seem inclined to comment on it.
If we want to do something, McLaren must give us their agreement, and if McLaren wants to do something, they need our agreement. I can only assure you that our collaboration is long-term. The rest is just speculation, and I do not wish to comment on it. Declared Norbert Haug.
