The former Silver Arrows driver, Mika Hakkinen, expressed his astonishment that the Woking team is seeking a new driver. The Mercedes team that led the Finn to two driver titles in 1998 and 1999 openly considers a new teammate alongside Lewis Hamilton.
But the double world champion expresses his opinion towards McLaren, which, according to him, should keep his compatriot Heikki Kovalainen. « Are they looking for a driver? Really? I didn’t know, » declared the Finn.
While the main candidate for Heikki Kovalainen’s seat is Kimi Räikkönen, Mika Hakkinen believes that the Finnish driver’s contribution to McLaren is underestimated.
« All the fantastic work done does not rest on the shoulders of one man, but on teamwork, » insisted the double world champion.
« If you look at the performances of Lewis and Heikki, you have to examine not only the race results but also what is happening in the background, » explained Mika Hakkinen. « These two guys are doing a fantastic job. Are they looking for a new driver? Why should they do that? »
