Joy and regret are present within the BMW-Sauber team following the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. An unexpected podium allows for an additional spot in the constructors’ standings, but a fickle fuel pump leaves a sense of bitterness.
Robert Kubica delivered a solid race to secure a well-deserved first podium of the season in Brazil. Having not finished in the top three since last year’s Japanese Grand Prix, the Pole now positions himself ahead of his teammate Nick Heidfeld. The latter did not have the same luck, being forced to retire due to a fuel issue.
Robert Kubica – 2nd:
The foundation for a good result today was laid yesterday when we decided to take a risk and drive with low downforce on the wet. This setup worked well in Q1 but was very difficult in Q3. Although some people were disappointed with eighth place yesterday, I was very satisfied. Today, we had a good consistent pace. I was surprised at first that it was quite easy to follow Rubens Barrichello and Mark Webber. But I had to lower the engine revs after about 15 laps because the temperature was too high, so I had to avoid all slipstreams from the drivers ahead of me. After my first stop, I was unlucky because I got stuck behind four cars. At this point, Mark was able to increase his lead. This is a very good result in a difficult season, and I really hope to see this team on the grid next year.
Nick Heidfeld – Abandon:
« My start wasn’t perfect but I saw that there were very close fights and decided it was better to stay out of trouble. Then there were two crashes in quick succession at the exit of turn number five. I was able to overtake a few cars, but among them was Romain Grosjean, who is not very fair-play. I was worried because I could lose my front wing. Then, I had to make my first pit stop. The car was fast, and I quickly received the order to save fuel, but it was too late. I ran out of fuel in turn 8. At least it’s good that the team is still happy today. »
Mario Theissen – BMW Motorsport Director:
« First of all, congratulations to Jenson Button and Ross Brawn for winning both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships. But today, we also have some reasons to be happy. Robert delivered a solid performance, without the slightest error. He was the only one on the track who could make a difference with the speed of the leading driver throughout the race. His second place is a well-deserved reward for the intense work and efforts of the past few weeks. For the whole team, it is important to achieve a good result at the end of this difficult season. I want to thank all the team members for this. Unfortunately, the fuel pump didn’t work during Nick’s pit stop. Until then, he was driving very strongly. This is our second podium before finishing this season, it allows us to move up a position in the Constructors’ Championship. We want to keep this momentum for the final race in Abu Dhabi. »
