Lewis Hamilton took advantage of his trip to Brazil to visit Ayrton Senna’s grave. The driver, who lost his life at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, is considered a role model by many other drivers. In the past two years, the young McLaren driver already wanted to visit the great champion, who is his idol.
His grave is located at the Morumbi Cemetery in Sao Paulo, not far from the Interlagos circuit. But he was always in the battle for the title and didn’t have the required time. This year, Lewis Hamilton is not in the race for the world crown, which is why he has far fewer marketing obligations and can finally fulfill his dream.
« It was really impressive, the place inspires simplicity, all it takes is a plaque », said Lewis Hamilton. « For me, it was something very special. It was only a matter of time before I came to see my idol. I wanted to do it over the past two years, but I’ve been very busy during that time. Yesterday, that was not the case, at least I think so. »
The legend’s grave, however, is never without visitors and the Briton did not experience this moment alone: « I only visited his grave for a few minutes, because there were other people there and I didn’t really want to be there at the same time as them. »
Ayrton Senna’s status surpassed that of a mere sports champion in Brazil; he is considered one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, winning the world championship title three times. He is also the last driver in this discipline to have lost his life.
