To destabilize his future teammate, Felipe Massa states that he remains suspicious that Fernando Alonso was fully aware of Piquet Jr’s planned maneuver to deliberately cause an accident to benefit Alonso before the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. However, he insists that this will not change his relationship with the Spaniard.
Massa spoke to the Brazilian media when he came to Sao Paulo this Wednesday, and during lunch, he said he had no doubt that Alonso was aware of Nelson Piquet Jr.’s plans. “In the end, that’s the least of the problems,” Massa told Brazilian media regarding Fernando Alonso’s involvement in the ‘crashgate’.
«It was the plan of the team and Nelson [Piquet Jr], but Alonso is an integral part of the problem. He knew. We have no proof but I am certain he knew, absolutely certain. » These comments created a storm in the Brazilian media before the Brazilian Grand Prix. Massa as well as Ferrari quickly clarified these remarks in a statement on the official website of the Maranello team this Thursday morning.
In this one, Massa explains that his comments are based on his own feelings and that they fully respect the conclusions of the FIA investigation which state that Fernando Alonso was unaware of his team’s and Nelson Piquet Jr.’s plans.
« What I said is the result of a feeling I had and is not based on any concrete evidence, » wrote Massa in his statement. « The FIA World Council stated that there was no indication that Fernando was informed of the on-track events and I respect these conclusions. »
Obviously, I am very disappointed about what transpired last year in Singapore: I have already said several times what I think about it, and now it is time to close this chapter and look to the future. What is certain is that this episode will in no way deteriorate the relationship I will have with Fernando when we are teammates.
Massa had previously indicated that he wanted all points recorded at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to be withdrawn, after losing a certain victory due to a botched pit stop during the safety period caused by Piquet Jr.’s crash. If the FIA withdraws the Singapore points, which is unlikely, Massa would be the 2008 world champion ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
