An examination in Paris confirmed yesterday that Felipe Massa has completely regained his vision after his accident at the Hungaroring. The left eye of the Ferrari driver had been severely affected after a spring, which detached from Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn GP car, struck and pierced his helmet at over 240 km/h.
Since Monday, Massa has been back in Maranello and has resumed work in earnest. The Brazilian also announced his intention to get back into an F1 car. This test, approved by all teams, will be conducted in a F2007 fitted with GP2 tires and could take place next Monday.
This Friday, Massa underwent a series of neurological and ophthalmological examinations by the FIA medical team at the Pitié Salpetrière hospital in Paris to check his progress. The initial results are positive, according to a statement from Ferrari, particularly the ophthalmological exams, which confirm that Felipe, accompanied by his personal doctor Dino Altmann, has fully recovered the function of his left eye. He will undergo further tests this Saturday.
Felipe Massa has resumed training and work in Maranello all this week, completing two days of running in the team’s simulator. The driver admitted yesterday that there is little chance he will be ready for the Abu Dhabi race, as he initially hoped, but he remains confident that he will be fully fit in time for the start of the 2010 season.
