Red Bull director Christian Horner says that his team has only one eye on the championship, as they focus on winning the Brazilian Grand Prix in an attempt to snatch the title fight at the finish line.
Sebastian Vettel took a significant step towards his championship ambitions last Sunday by winning the Japanese Grand Prix, while Jenson Button only finished eighth. Vettel thus reduced the gap from 25 to 16 points with two races remaining.
The German still has a mountain to climb, and he needs Jenson Button to have two very poor races to become champion. However, it is remembered that in 2007, Kimi Räikkönen was 17 points behind Lewis Hamilton with two races left in the season and still managed to win the title. Christian Horner, encouraged by this example, is convinced that this scenario can happen again, and that the pressure is on the shoulders of Button and his team, Brawn GP.
Kimi [Räikkönen] came back from even further two years ago, but we only have one eye on the championship, stated Horner after the Suzuka race. Our main concern is to win the races; then the pressure will be on Brawn GP. There is, of course, a chance. We are now 16 points behind, and we were 25 points down, so the chances are better than they were. We must attack and win the races to try and win the championship at the final race in Abu Dhabi.
Horner also announces that Red Bull will continue to push the development of their car in order to be as competitive as possible in the last two races.
«We need to keep our heads down and keep pushing, and we will bring new developments for the next two events, » he added, before praising Sebastian Vettel’s performance in Japan. «I think it was an impressive drive. It was an absolute flawless performance and he led from start to finish. I’m happy for him and I’m happy for the team. It’s unfortunate for Mark [Webber], but his luck definitely deserted him this weekend, but they’ll both be there in Brazil. »
