Lewis Hamilton has a big smile in the Suzuka paddocks. This Grand Prix means a lot to him and he is eager to race again tomorrow. Even Felipe Massa’s statements cannot spoil his weekend.
How are you approaching this weekend after your victory in Singapore?
It feels good to be here. I’m so happy to be in Suzuka. This track is fantastic. It’s an incredible circuit. I really can’t describe it.
What is it like to drive at Suzuka for the first time?
The track is very special. Since I was young, I’ve always wanted to drive here. When I watched Formula 1 on TV, I had already noticed this circuit. I remember what happened in ’89 at the last chicane. Yesterday, I was standing at the edge of the track thinking, “wow,” this is where one of the incidents with Senna and Prost occurred.
Did you like the track?
Yes. For me, it’s the best track in the world. Obviously, it’s a different kind of place compared to Monaco, but otherwise, it’s something very special for me.
So, what’s the plan for this weekend?
It’s a track that should favor the Red Bull and Brawn teams. It’s a track with quite a bit of downforce. They should be very fast here. But I wouldn’t say we’re not in the running. We want at least a podium, that’s why we’re here to win, as always.
Felipe Massa said that the title was stolen from him last year and that he should be the champion, not you. What do you think about that?
First, I must say that it’s good news he’s recovering quickly. And all I can say is that it was a tough season, there were a lot of “ifs” throughout the season, so I’m a bit surprised to hear him say that. But to be honest, I believe we had a fair battle throughout the season.
How do you evaluate Kimi Räikkönen as a driver?
It’s clearly one of the best.
Will it be a challenge to have him as a teammate?
The race is always a challenge, so yes.
Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa are likely to be your main opposing force next year. How do you judge them?
It’s going to be one of the best line-ups, I think. Kimi and Felipe have been very strong in the past. It’s going to be a tough and very interesting season. But don’t forget that we are a great team, so we will have solutions.
How do you feel about Felipe’s comments and what would you really like to say to him?
As I was saying, it’s good to see that he is on the road to recovery. Everyone here is happy that he is doing well and that we all missed him. We are all looking forward to seeing him return. I’m a bit shocked to hear him say that, because I’ve always felt he was a fair driver and he knows we had the right to a fair battle at the end. That’s how I see things. But what he said didn’t really affect me.
