Sébastien Loeb, five-time reigning world rally champion, will conduct a test in a GP2 single-seater, the stepping stone to Formula 1. This test will take place after the Catalonia rally scheduled at the end of this week around Salou, near Barcelona, as reported by Citroën WRC Racing on Monday.
This test will last only one day, specified the French brand, within an English team, the David Price Racing (DPR), which Loeb already knows for having participated with it in a race of the French Porsche Carrera Cup.
Loeb arrived this Monday morning in Catalonia to do the reconnaissance for the rally, the 11th and penultimate round of the World Championship (WRC). He is trailing by three points to Mikko Hirvonen, the Finn from Ford, who has won the last four rounds of the season.
Loeb has already indicated that he would love to participate in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix of F1 on November 1st, once the rally season ends in Great Britain (October 23-25). He has already received the green light from Olivier Quesnel, the head of Citroën Racing, in case the opportunity arises.
The GP2 single-seaters being relatively close in performance and behavior to the F1 cars that Loeb dreams of driving in Abu Dhabi, it will be a good opportunity for him to get some practice.
Loeb has already driven in F1 cars, first in a Renault at the end of 2007 on the Paul Ricard HTTT circuit, then in a Red Bull at the end of 2008 on the Barcelona circuit. The Austrian energy drink manufacturer is also one of the main sponsors of Citroën Racing in rallies. During these two tests, Sébastien Loeb was rather fast and very close to the times of the real F1 drivers present on those days. Only the fast corners and the monstrous braking of the F1 cars gave him some problems. In all other areas of driving, he proved to be at the level.
If Sébastien Loeb participates in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, there is a strong chance that it will be at the wheel of a Toro Rosso and in Jaime Alguersuari’s seat.
