Formula 1 continued its use of the points system this year, despite a different proposal at the start of the season, namely based on the number of wins. The idea, suggested by Bernie Ecclestone, would have seen Jenson Button clinch his first world title in Singapore.

With the current points system awarded to those finishing between first and eighth position, Bernie Ecclestone’s medal proposal would have seen the winner of the most Grand Prix secure the championship title. With six victories recorded out of the fourteen races so far, the failure of Rubens Barrichello or Sebastian Vettel would have allowed Button to be champion in Singapore, with still three races remaining.

As it stands, however, the Englishman heads to Japan this weekend with a 15-point lead over his teammate Barrichello, meaning that Button will become champion by scoring five more points than Barrichello. Vettel is next and is the third man who can still ultimately win the title, trailing Button by 25 points and Barrichello by 10.
