Summary: Double simultaneous retirement for Toro Rosso

It was a difficult race for Toro Rosso under the heat, humidity, and lights of Singapore. Both drivers were forced to retire in the same lap. Jaime Alguersuari retired when his team ordered him to due to a brake issue.

As for Sébastien Buemi, it was his gearbox that forced him to retire from the race. However, Buemi had started his race well and was battling with Kimi Räikkönen’s Ferrari, until a refueling problem, partly due to his teammate’s fault, ruined his efforts.

Jaime Alguersuari – Retirement:

It would have been difficult for me to do better today, since the racing conditions such as the track difficulty and the heat were very challenging. I drove at my own pace and then had to retire due to a brake issue. Now, we’re heading to Suzuka where I hope to get results and finish the race without technical problems.

Sébastien Buemi – Retirement:

The start was good for me since I managed to overtake Kimi and things were going well, but towards the end of the first stint, I started suffering from tire degradation. The first pit stop went well, and I rejoined in 12th position. After that, the safety car came out, bunching up the field. I was behind Kimi again and tried to pressure him into a mistake until my second stop, but we had an issue as the fuel pump didn’t work, and I had to pit again. Eventually, I had a problem with the gearbox, which meant I had to retire. I am very disappointed that we had reliability issues in a race where we could have achieved a good result.

Franz Tost – Team Principal:

The two drivers got off to a good start, with Buemi moving up to twelfth place and Alguersuari in fourteenth. Buemi defended his position until Räikkönen overtook him. Buemi’s first pit stop went according to plan. Then, we had a major problem during Jaime’s first stop, as he tried to leave before the lollipop was raised, damaging the fuel pump. As a result, when Sébastien came in for his second stop, no fuel was delivered to him, and we had to ask him to stop again. Towards the end, we called him back to the pits because the data showed his gearbox oil pressure was dropping, for reasons we now need to investigate. When Jaime made his second stop, we saw he had an issue with the front brakes, the cause of which has not yet been identified. For safety reasons, we instructed him to retire.
