The driver transfer market cleared this Sunday in Singapore, starting with Ferrari. Luca di Montezemolo had stated a few days ago: “We have a Brazilian driver who deserves a second chance, especially since he is in good health. As for the rest, we will think about the best choice to make, but we still have time. We will make a decision in a few weeks.”
The most likely option was Fernando Alonso, who also stated a few days ago that his future was settled but he was not able to disclose his future team. MotorsInside is now able to confirm that the second Ferrari driver, alongside Felipe Massa, will indeed be Fernando Alonso, which moves Kimi Räikkönen back to his former team, McLaren.
Jean-François Cobé, CEO of Renault, stated at the end of the race in Singapore: « We will miss Fernando Alonso and he will miss us too because we are his family. » This follows the very beautiful podium finish by the Spaniard in the Asian city-state.
McLaren-Mercedes is therefore pushing Kovalainen out. He has very few options for his future in Formula 1 and must therefore turn to one of the new teams present on the grid next year, or possibly to Toyota. The latter has indeed stated that nothing has been decided yet regarding the drivers.
Another transfer is Kubica to Renault. The Polish driver, who has been taking French lessons for some time, will likely be alongside Romain Grosjean, if the latter manages to deliver better performances in the last races of the season.
On the Williams side, nothing is finalized either. They are awaiting confirmation for Nico Hülkenberg, the recent GP2 champion, and Rosberg has only one other option, which happens to be Brawn GP. He could replace Rubens Barrichello if Barrichello is not champion at the end of the season. As for Button, champion or not, there is a very strong chance he will keep his seat, with a salary increase as a bonus.
