Barrichello: « The fight will remain clean »

The championship, barring an incredible turn of events, will be contested between the drivers of the Brawn GP team. Rubens Barrichello believes that the battle against his teammate, Jenson Button, will be open and remain within the bounds of sportsmanship.

« For me, I do my work in the most open way possible, the same way as in the past, » said Barrichello in Singapore. « And that will not change. I think it’s quite clear that we both want the best possible strategy for the team, and the best among us will win the races and the championship. I have no problem with that. »

Nowadays, it is impossible to test something without your teammate being aware of it. With all the telemetry, with all the conversations, it’s impossible to do. It’s very open, and I’m very happy about it.

The Brazilian is 14 points behind Button in the standings, and there are only four races left for Barrichello, including the one in Singapore, to try to make up this deficit. In the last three Grand Prix races, he managed to gain 12 points on Button, giving him even more confidence. Barrichello still insists that he does not project himself into the future and takes the races one at a time.

« As usual, in fact, » he commented on how he approaches the final stretch of the championship. « Some time ago, I was 26 points behind. My championship started then. I told myself that I needed to win a race, and I did. Then I won another one, which was fantastic. So I have to do everything to win more and keep my feet on the ground. »

« I think about the race itself, about winning and I’m going to try to take some points from Jenson Button. That’s all I can do. If I start thinking too big, then it might be a bad thing. I keep my feet on the ground, work as hard as I can, work on my car in order to perform well onboard, and I only wish for the best. »

The Brawn GP veteran admits he has never felt, in his entire career spanning 281 Grand Prix, as close to winning his first championship.

« Yes, indeed. Especially because we are on an equal footing. I have been in situations before where I never knew if the team would allow me to do this or that. But now I feel good. I believe the team has given both drivers the same options, which are to win and push. I am really happy about that. »
