Mark Webber declares that, from now on, he will handle his own contract negotiations and also states that he will not seek to replace Flavio Briatore. The Australian had been managed by Briatore for many years, but the FIA council ordered the end of all transactions by Briatore with drivers. He has been banned from any involvement in any FIA-sanctioned sport in any way due to the Renault affair. The board also said it will not renew the super license of any driver still under contract with the Italian.
Webber says he is very satisfied with how Flavio Briatore has managed his career and has never had any complaints, and he will not seek another manager: « Flavio has taken care of me for 11 years, » stated the Red Bull driver. « I have never reviewed a contract since I signed in the first year. He has been sensational with me, and I wouldn’t work with anyone else in the future if I can no longer work with him. »
He believes that Briatore will be missed in Formula 1 despite the way things ended for the Italian: “He’s a very good character for our sport and many agree with that,” said Webber. “It seems we won’t see him around the paddocks anymore, but that’s how it is.”
But while Webber remained positive about his commitment with Briatore, he admitted that the scandal itself dealt a major blow to F1: « I don’t think it’s ideal for our sport, we all love this sport and work hard to get into it, » he said. « It’s something you aspire to, just as journalists aspire to work in a top sport. It’s a shame that we’re only talking about the bad things when the spotlight should be on the sport and it has been that way for a few years now. I’m starting to run out of patience with this sport and I’m sure that’s the case for many other people too. »
