Formula 1 has become an expensive sport requiring significant investment, despite efforts to reduce costs. Teams and their investors cannot afford to commit to the championship without the guarantee of participation.
No matter, a few hours after accepting BMW, the governing bodies of the FIA announced they must urgently consult with the ten existing teams in order to expand the grid to 14 teams for 2010.
« The FIA thinks it’s a good opportunity to expand the grid to 14 teams. » could be read in an FIA statement released on Tuesday.
« The existing teams will be urgently consulted regarding the introduction of an appropriate rule change to extend the grid to 28 cars for the first Grand Prix in 2010. »
No doubt that on recent circuits, such as Sepang, Bahrain, and Istanbul, they will be able to accommodate 14 teams and provide them with the conditions that Formula 1 requires.
