Only confined to the 13th and 14th positions, the Williams had difficulties climbing up the timesheets during the first free practice sessions in Italy. The second session wasn’t much better in terms of Nico Rosberg’s performance. The German finished in an unusual 17th place, while his Japanese teammate ended up 9th, salvaging the Friday for the Grove-based team.
Williams doesn’t have much hope for Saturday’s qualifying, but ideally, they would like to get a car into Q3.
Nico Rosberg – 13th and 17th:
«The most important task today is to find a compromise between top speed and grip, and it’s not easy to achieve an optimal level of downforce. We were very slow on the straights this morning, so it took us time to find a good solution. The tires are also very important, and we conducted good tests. Despite some progress, it will be difficult for us, and it won’t be a good weekend. To replicate the performance in Spa and get into the top 10 in qualifying, it would take a “heroic” lap!»
Nazuki Nakajima – 14th and 9th:
Although we are not expecting a great performance here, today wasn’t too bad. Certainly, compared to Spa, I think I will be more competitive on this circuit, even if it’s too early to predict tomorrow’s qualifying. We have worked hard and we are trying to find a positive direction to be competitive. The main priority is to maintain this progress tomorrow.
Patrick Head – Technical Director:
We focused our work on the tires today. Both tires seem quite good, and we have collected a lot of data to optimize our performance for tomorrow.
