We might have suspected it, but it’s now official: it’s Vitantonio Liuzzi who will take the seat left vacant by Giancarlo Fisichella in the number 21 Force India: « I am delighted to give Tonio this opportunity to get back into a race seat and I know he’s been itching for it for two years, » stated Vijay Mallya simply.
But the preamble is quickly followed by a demand for results… « Force India is now very competitive, and we need a driver who can engage with this dynamic. Tonio has the chance to demonstrate to the team as well as the entire field that he is conscientious, fast, and professional, and I am sure he will seize this opportunity. »
The Italian, who has 39 Grand Prix starts and whose last race was the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix, has not driven a Formula 1 car since November 2008 during testing.
“I’m eager to get back into a racing-configured car, especially for my home Grand Prix,” Liuzzi stated. “I am confident I can build on our recent progress. I am highly motivated, in good shape, and hungry for points. Even though it’s unfortunate that this promotion comes due to Felipe’s accident, it’s an opportunity for me to show what I can do and I’m really looking forward to it.”
