The next Grand Prix of the championship will be held in Monza, the fastest circuit of the season, where the importance of KERS will be decisive according to the McLaren team.
Having already each won a victory with cars equipped with KERS, McLaren and Ferrari are optimistic approaching the Italian Grand Prix, with both teams deciding to continue the development of the system this season. Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren’s director, believes that KERS will be the best asset for his team, which is aiming for a second victory in 2009.
Monza is reputed to be a power circuit, and with the KERS, we should see incredible speeds, particularly during qualifying when the drivers will use the KERS twice on the start/finish line, Whitemarsh stated in a press interview.
McLaren has scored more points in the last four races than any other team, and in its dynamic spiral hopes to claim victory in Monza, the land that saw a double win for the silver arrows in 2007. In contrast, the German rival BMW has decided to stop the development of KERS this year and might struggle to achieve the same result as in Spa.
The speed we had at Spa-Francorchamps with low downforce gives us good hopes for Monza where we can do even better with even less downforce. However, the cars equipped with KERS will probably have a considerable advantage in the long straights of the circuit, regretted Heidfeld, fifth at Spa.
