The British Jenson Button, leader of the championship since the start of the season, is currently experiencing a slump in terms of results. After an incredible start to the year with 6 wins in 7 races, Button hasn’t been on a podium since Turkey, at the beginning of June.
But Brawn’s driver wants to win again this season, clinch the title by fighting for victories and not by playing it safe and just managing his lead by scoring a few points regularly.
We have started to become competitive again. I only need to finish fourth or fifth, but that’s not what I want. I want to win races, declared Jenson after experiencing his first retirement of the season this weekend in Belgium.
This is why I’m here and this is what I love to do, fight at the front. So I’m going to have an aggressive approach. I won’t suddenly back out of qualifying and take it lightly during the races because if I’m in fifth place, I still want to do better, I still want to win races, and I still want to be competitive, and that’s exactly what will happen, I hope, at Monza, continued the 29-year-old Englishman.
Despite his disappointing performances, Button remains optimistic about his title chances against the combined comebacks of his teammate Barrichello and the Red Bull drivers Vettel and Webber. The four men are within 20.5 points in the championship with 5 races remaining.
I remain positive and I am excited about the challenge the upcoming races represent. I am not frustrated or negative. We have some work to do to ensure the car performs well in the chicanes at Monza, but it’s a circuit that should be reasonably good for our car, says Button.
« I think we will see the Red Bulls very close in Monza, but I don’t think they will be our main rivals there; it could be more the McLarens and the Force India because they are good with low downforce. Kimi will also be fast, and I don’t know who will be in the other Ferrari », concluded Jenson.
Jenson Button has regularly been competitive on the Monza circuit. Although he finished in 15th position last year driving his unruly Honda, he previously had 5 points finishes for as many times as he saw the checkered flag in the temple of speed in Italy.
