Assessment: Satisfactory Points for BMW

Since the announcement of BMW’s withdrawal, the drivers had no hope of placing well in the races. That was until the Spa-Francorchamps Grand Prix. BMW drivers managed to score points, achieving the second-best performance of the weekend with 9 points.

Robert Kubica managed to take a fine 4th place after fighting for the podium against Sebastian Vettel. The German Nick Heidfeld, just behind, finished 5th at the finish line. A satisfying Grand Prix, and promising before Monza. Will the BMW Sauber team make the governing bodies of the team regret their decision?

Robert Kubica – 4th:

«I managed to get a good start and finish second after the first corner. I was surprised to see Kimi next to me going through Eau Rouge. It’s a very tricky spot, so I preferred to play it safe because, in the past, we’ve seen many accidents there. Although we had slight contact, I was able to continue. At times, we were lacking a bit of speed, but it was nice to fight for the podium. The result gives us points, and it’s good for the team. The result proves that we are competitive on fast corners circuits, which is a good sign for Monza. However, we need to analyze why the car was more competitive during yesterday’s qualifications.»

Nick Heidfeld – 5th:

« Although it’s a very good result for the team, I have to admit that I’m disappointed. Starting 3rd on the grid, I had higher expectations, but I lost the race on the first lap. After the start, I tried to brake to avoid Jarno, but I lost ground because the tire temperature was still not right. I lost many places. Later, during my first pit stop, I had to lock the brakes in the pit lane to avoid Mark Webber. In the last stint, my pace was really good, and I was able to close the gap with Robert. But when you’re faster, you can’t overtake, because if you’re less than two seconds behind another car, it starts sending you dirty air, causing a loss of downforce.»

Mario Theissen – Director:

After our best qualification, it was also the best result of the season. With 4th and 5th place, we are the only team to have two cars in the top 8. Nick narrowly missed the podium, and Robert damaged his right front wing, but he was able to continue. A big compliment to the whole team for this solid performance.
