Jarno Trulli is not far from retirement age in Formula 1 and his contract expires at the end of 2009, but the Italian driver would still like to race for Toyota in 2010. The initial goal remains Toyota’s first victory.
After 209 races spread over 13 seasons in the premier category, the 35-year-old Italian has no desire to hang up his helmet and wishes above all to keep racing on the tracks for one more season. The vineyards and his family members can still wait for Jarno Trulli’s return to his homeland.
« At the moment, I appreciate my driving » declared Trulli to Autosport. « As long as we are fast, there is no reason to worry. Naturally, you never know what will happen, because currently, it’s difficult to see in which direction Formula 1 is going. But it will become clearer. »
Not only is the Toyota driver satisfied with his performance, but he also doesn’t feel like he’s quitting F1. Jarno explains: « I still have a lot to do. I feel strong and hope I can remain in Formula 1 as a driver. » Discussions that have not yet been held between the driver and his team, because « the teams still have other things to do » he explains.
Jarno Trulli won his only Grand Prix in Monaco in 2004 with a Renault. With the Japanese team, the Italian never managed to win a single Grand Prix, but he doesn’t lose hope. « It is certainly the biggest goal I’m pursuing this year, and I still believe in it. »
« Of course, there is a gap to fill. But I hope I will get there, whether it’s now, next week, or another weekend. When that day comes, it will just be necessary to be ready to do it ».
The Italian driver has 21.50 points at the start of the 10th Grand Prix of the season, which puts him in sixth place in the driver standings, matching his career-best result if he manages to maintain this position until the end of the year. The end of 2009 coinciding with the end of his contract…
