Jaime Alguersuari, Red Bull reserve driver, would become the youngest driver in Formula 1 history if he drives at the next Grand Prix for Toro Rosso, replacing Sébastien Bourdais. After a weekend of discussions about Sébastien Bourdais’ future, Toro Rosso is expected to confirm its position regarding the French driver within the next 48 hours.
Although the Toro Rosso team decided that British F3 champion Jaime Alguersuari would be integrated into the team alongside Sébastien Buemi, the Scuderia Toro Rosso management refused to comment on the current situation. Indeed, the young Spaniard is currently focusing on a race weekend at Le Mans for the World Series by Renault.
Toro Rosso would decide to give the young driver a chance to race despite his lack of experience. A way for the Spaniard to gain experience in preparation for a full season in 2010. From a commercial perspective, Repsol, the oil company and the Spaniard’s main sponsor, could have financial agreements with the Toro Rosso team.
If Jaime Alguersuari were to drive in Hungary on July 26th, he would make his debut at the young age of 19 years and 125 days, setting a new record in the process! The previous record was held by Mike Thackwell, who debuted for Tyrrell at the Canadian Grand Prix in 1980 at 19 years and 182 days.
The future of Sébastien Bourdais, the last French driver on the grid, is more than uncertain. His performances do not meet the expectations of the Italian team Toro Rosso. If Alguersuari were to take Bourdais’ place, the small Scuderia would be betting on youth in this tough year of 2009…
