Adrian Sutil, whose contract expires at the end of this season, will not go to great lengths to leave Force India. The 26-year-old German has competed in more than 40 races with the team based in Silverstone, previously known as Spyker, since his F1 debut in 2007.
2010 would in such a case be his fourth year at the back of the grid, but Sutil reveals to Auto Motor und Sport that his plan would be to drive for a top team next year.
“It’s the goal of all drivers,” he explained, “and also mine. Really, I just want to win, and which team it is for is not the issue for me.”
Force India has made progress and we need to see how it evolves in the coming years, acknowledged the driver whose best result this season is his 9th position in Australia.
Sutil also announced that during his three years in F1, there were discussions between his manager and other teams.
Currently, I am focusing on where I am. The contract runs until the end of the year and then we will see.
Furthermore, he believes that the fact that Force India has a smaller budget than its competitors is not the main problem. I don’t think it’s just the money, it’s the complete package. Maybe we’re missing a ‘super engineer’ like Adrian Newey at Red Bull.
Sutil’s car could see a major evolution next month, as Mercedes’ KERS is expected to be installed for the first time. However, the driver is not so convinced of the advantage this system provides, particularly because of its weight. “I think the KERS is a good thing if it works. But at the moment, it doesn’t really work, for anyone.”
