Former F1 driver David Coulthard announced that Jenson Button’s victory in Monaco assured him the world championship title this year.
Button won his fifth victory of the season in Monaco, after only six races in the championship. The Brawn GP driver increased his lead to 16 points over his teammate Rubens Barrichello, and his next rival, Sebastian Vettel, is now 28 points behind.
And since no competitor seems to seriously threaten Brawn GP, Coulthard thinks the title is already secured for Button.
« It’s done. All bets are off, » declared Coulthard to the Telegraph. « If Jenson Button is not world champion by the end of the summer, then, frankly, I would be surprised. »
« His victory in the streets of Monaco last Sunday was another incredible chapter in what will quickly become one of the greatest sports comebacks, » added the former driver.
« It’s just that I don’t see any other driver capable of overtaking him now. Five victories in six races is as many as Lewis Hamilton with McLaren last year over the whole season. »
About Hamilton, Coulthard thinks there’s no doubt that Lewis will be back at the front. What a spectacle we will have with these two drivers, both champions, who will fight for the title next year!
