Fernando Alonso admits he has doubts about the future of his Formula 1 career if the arguments about the budget cap proposal for the 2010 season continue.
The Spaniard, World Champion in 2005 and 2006, is eager to know the outcome of this situation, given that several teams have threatened to leave the sport as early as next year.
Friday, May 29 is the registration deadline for the next season. A number of teams are still in talks to leave F1 if the FIA – Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile – maintains the budget cap of 40 million British Pounds next year.
« This is very concerning, » said Alonso in Monte Carlo.
I tried not to think about it anymore and to focus on my activity, but it’s true that last week, while I was at home, it was impossible not to think about it, because I don’t know if this will be my last Monaco Grand Prix. If the big teams and manufacturers leave F1, then I don’t want to race with small teams, as it wouldn’t be or no longer be F1, and there will be many other similar categories.
Currently, Toyota, Red Bull, and Renault share similar views with Ferrari, knowing that a group of new teams is waiting to enter the championship for the first time next season.
« For me, it’s strange that no one has turned around and demonstrated how we have damaged this sport but also, what we have endured over the last two months, » continued Alonso.
« Obtaining these three or four additional teams at the expense of losing seven of the major manufacturers, I absolutely cannot understand. It will not only mean losing seven major manufacturers but also the loss of the ten best drivers in the world, which will make F1 less interesting. »
