If the competitor Mercedes is still divided on its future in F1, BMW has confirmed that it wishes to continue its program in the top category in the coming years. As revealed by Mario Theissen, the team director, the commitment to F1 is of great value for the Munich car manufacturer.
« Formula 1 is beneficial for BMW. Before the season, the program was once again studied in detail and the financial situation was part of this analysis. However, in the long term, we still need success, » he told reporters from RTL.
Although BMW started the year with the intention of fighting for the title, the beginning of the season has been disastrous with only 4 points scored in the first four races of the year.
After another disappointment in Bahrain where both cars were the last to finish, BMW hopes to improve its performance in Europe with the introduction of a new aero package.
According to some media, there might be another more commercial reason for BMW’s desire to stay in Formula 1: the German team reportedly wants to become the sole supplier of KERS from 2010 onwards, following the FIA’s desire to standardize this technology. BMW is currently the only manufacturer to have announced its candidacy, which will likely be followed by Mercedes during the season.
