With the arrival of an intermediate diffuser, the improvement was immediate at McLaren-Mercedes as everything went smoothly right from the morning’s free practice. 3rd and 7th this morning in tests, Hamilton and Kovalainen more or less confirmed in qualifying.
The current world champion is doing the best since, for the first time, he makes it into Q3 with a 9th place time. The Finnish driver does slightly less well with 12th place but will be able to choose his fuel load.
Lewis Hamilton – 3rd and 9th:
Step by step, we are moving forward. And thanks to all the guys at the factory for this fantastic work on the new parts. Every little effort allows us to surpass competitors. There is still a long way to go, but this feels like the beginning of healing.
Heikki Kovalainen – 7th and 12th:
« We really improved our car this weekend. It is unfortunate to have stayed in Q2, but I am happy for the team as Lewis made it into Q3. Although 12th position doesn’t really reflect my pace, it is clear that we are heading in the right direction. With a good strategy, my goal is to score my first point of the year. »
Martin Whitmarsh – Team Principal:
Lewis is in ninth place for the first time this season with an entry in Q3, and this also shows the effort made at the Technology Centre to improve the MP4-24. Certainly, there is still a long way to go, and we will not be satisfied until we are first. However, it is an important and encouraging step for the whole team. Lewis’s laps, particularly in Q1 and Q2, were absolutely extraordinary and worthy of a great champion. Meanwhile, Heikki remained stuck in 12th place. He and his engineers did a fantastic job. As a result, we are heading into the race optimistically, hoping for both cars to be in the points.
