Renault participated today in the third qualifying session of the 2009 World Championship. Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet qualified in 2nd and 16th place.
This is good news for all Renault fans since the new diffuser seems to be working on the Spaniard’s car. A stark contrast compared to his teammate, Nelson Piquet, who doesn’t have it.
Fernando Alonso – 19th and 2nd:
« The car was fast this morning in free practice. Our main goal was to test the new parts that were brought in overnight. So we only did three flying laps. Finally reaching the front row is a great source of motivation for the team. This result is quite incredible, it’s the first time I’ve seen something like this. The team members have worked 24/7 for weeks, and today was the moment of truth. A big thank you to the engineers and mechanics at the circuit, who haven’t had much sleep to prepare the car. Also, Renault engines occupy the top three spots on the grid, so thanks to our French branch, Viry-Châtillon. We can be satisfied with today’s result and we look forward to the start tomorrow. The objective will be to score points. »
Nelson Piquet – 5th and 16th (qualified 17th):
« I didn’t have the new mechanical elements brought for Fernando’s car, but it’s disappointing not to be able to get into Q2 because despite that, the car was working very well this morning. We had managed to improve its behavior since yesterday. I know a tough race awaits me, but I hope our strategy can unfold as we intend. I will then be able to gain positions. »
Pat Symonds – Executive Director of Engineering
« Fernando’s first lap is a beautiful response to all the work done at the factory to have our new diffuser ready in time, just after the FIA Court of Appeal’s verdict. This component is working as expected, but we had a slight scare this morning when the exhausts were burning the bodywork. Once again, the mechanics did a magnificent job to fix the problem. Now, we need to provide Nelson with the same equipment to give him a chance to start higher on the grid. »
