McLaren is the first team to have installed a diffuser similar to those of Brawn, Toyota, and Williams since their legality was announced on Wednesday. It is now installed on the MP4/24 in Shanghai.
The team added a small fin above the structure. This is the first step in a major development in this field.
The change for China is far from being a two-tier model, which will have to appear later during the races.
By adding this detail, the revised version of the diffuser is now both larger and taller. It increases by more than 90mm above the previously allowed 175 mm and extends by 40 mm in length.
But, since the flap is located within the 150 mm zone, it is perfectly legal.
In its current form, the diffuser is a small improvement compared to the previous version, but still far from the final version.
Other teams have developed a new diffuser in anticipation of the FIA Court of Appeal’s decision. This is the case for Renault, which could install a double diffuser this weekend.
