Vitantonio Liuzzi has signed a race driver contract in A1GP. He will represent his home country, Italy. He will make his racing debut at the Algarve circuit in Portugal next weekend.
The former Grand Prix driver is the current third driver for Force India. His team has allowed him to participate in his A1GP events on behalf of Italy so that he maintains a racing routine.
Liuzzi competed in eight Speedcar races over the winter, but he is happy to have an actual job driving a single-seater for three A1GP events this season. Unlike F1, this sport takes place between Autumn and Spring with a summer break instead of a winter one.
« I am really looking forward to trying the A1GP car and getting back to racing. It’s the thing I love doing the most, » said the Italian.
I’m happy that Vijay Mallya and Force India have agreed to release me from F1 races so that I can once again feel the adrenaline and atmosphere of a race.
Liuzzi used the A1GP simulator in Modena, Italy yesterday and will use it again today. He will then be behind the wheel of the car for the first time on Friday in Portimao, Portugal, in preparation for Sunday’s race.
The head of the A1GP category added: « It’s incredible to have a driver like Liuzzi in the sport. Clearly, his reputation is immense. I am delighted that a driver of his caliber is also happy to settle into an A1GP single-seater to represent his nation. »
The Italian team is currently 14th in the A1GP standings. Fabio Onidi and Edoardo Piscopo, the two drivers who have represented Italy since the beginning of the season, have each achieved a seventh place as their best result so far.
