Assessment: Malaysia is still paradise for Brawn GP

Brawn GP and Jenson Button continued their perfect run this Sunday at Sepang for the second race of the season. The Briton won the half Malaysian Grand Prix, halted after 31 laps due to bad weather. Barrichello also delivered a good performance by taking 5th position. With the double in the Australian GP last week, Brawn GP-Mercedes thus retains the lead in the constructors’ world championship, hands down.

Jenson Button started from pole position, and despite an average start, managed to regain the lead of the race after his first pit stop. He then benefited from the race’s interruption by the red flag to secure the win. The Englishman thus leads the championship before the next 15 Grand Prix. He will remember this day for a long time.

Jenson Button – 1st:

«What a crazy race! It was really exciting, and I am thrilled to have been in the lead when the race stopped. I didn’t have the best start of my career, but I was able to gradually move up and take advantage of my pit stop to overtake Trulli and Rosberg. We had a good pace during the race, but with the weather, nothing was guaranteed. Tire strategies were very important today, and I really thank Andrew Shovlin, my mechanic who was on the podium with me today, and the whole team for their work. Our fairy tale continues! »

Rubens Barrichello – 5th:

« It was a great race today, and I’m happy with the car’s performance in the first stint. I had a good start and knew I could catch up with the pack to score big points. Unfortunately, once the conditions started to deteriorate, we lost a bit too much time in the pit, which cost me a few places. But the important thing is that the car is good and we are competitive on all fronts. Congratulations to Jenson [Button] and the team for this great start to the season. I hope it continues in Shanghai. »

Ross Brawn – Director:

« A fantastic performance from the team this Sunday that deserved to secure a second victory. The race was full of emotions but we managed to react quickly to any changes in these conditions. However, we could have had both of our cars on the podium if we had refueled a little earlier. »

« It’s a great start to the season: two victories, two poles, we couldn’t ask for more, and it’s all thanks to the team’s talent. »
